We strive constantly to innovate at Speirs and Major Associates. It therefore follows that Research and Development is necessarily a part of our everyday work. It is also a fundamental belief that every member of our team must develop professionally.

We like to focus on lighting technology. If the results we are looking for can’t be created with the products available in the market place, then we’ll invent what we need. This means we are always talking to industry. As a result, we have already been credited with many innovative product developments. To achieve this, and as part of our wider approach, we work closely on special applications for projects with a wide variety of lighting manufacturers. Our approach, however, ensures that we maintain total commercial independence at all times.

We also actively engage with education through lecturing and running workshops. We have taught at various schools of architecture and design and lectured to professional bodies including the RIBA, AlA, CIBSE, IES, IALD, and ELDA in the UK, Europe, Scandinavia, USA, Canada and Australia. Members of our team regularly contribute to magazine articles and technical papers in industry and design journals. We are involved with professional validation, masterclasses and advanced training programmes within the architectural and lighting professions.

As well as providing regular Continuing Professional Development events for others we hold an in-house monthly programme. We visit the major lighting shows and conferences around the world for information and inspiration sharing valuable data and intelligence through our internal resource network.

In 2002 we developed an ‘outreach’ programme to help widen general appreciation of light and architecture. This programme follows our basic philosophy and is called, ‘Made of Light™’. It aims to produce publications and exhibitions and provide educational opportunities dedicated to the subject of light.
